Harman Dhawan is contesting from the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency under the banner of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. He had in late 2018 quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to join the AAP. He had been maintaining distance from the BJP since 2018, remained conspicuous by his absence in party events. He also made headlines with his move of hosting leaders like film star turned politician Shatrughan Sinha and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha, who had been critical of the BJP.
Dhawan attributes the reason of his leaving the BJP to the party’s failure to keep the promises made to people. He accused the BJP of not keeping a single promise made to people of Chandigarh in the 2014 manifesto.
Dr Harmohan Dhawan was born on 14 July 1940 at Fatehjung, District Caimbalpur (Now in West Pakistan). After partition of India in 1947, Dhawan’s family migrated to Ambala Cantt., India, where he did his Matriculation from B.D. High School, and Intermediate from S.D. College, Ambala Cantt.
In 1960, Dhawan joined the Department of Botany at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and did his B.Sc. (Honours) in 1963 and MSc (Honours) in the year 1965. Dhawan was a Research Scholar from 1965 to 1970 and joined the PL 480 aided project, wherein he did research on “Cytological Studies of the Economic Plants of North West Himalayas”. In the year 1970 Dhawan started a small scale unit and became President of Industries Association of Chandigarh. In the year 1979, he also entered the hospitality industry by launching a fine dining restaurant called “Mehfil”.
Harmohan Dhawan was awarded the best Young Entrepreneur Award by the Vice President of India in the year 1983.In the year 1977, he joined politics and the Late Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar was his political guru. Because of his Socialist bent of mind, Dhawan struggled for the welfare of the downtrodden and went to jail more than 10 times for their cause.
In 1989, he was elected as Member of Parliament from the Chandigarh constituency and became Minister of Civil Aviation, in the late Chandra Shekhar Government. He was a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is now the single most dominant party of the Indian parliament after the 2014 general election.
Dhawan’s Nature Cure
Dr Harmohan Dhawan runs Dhawan’s Nature Cure (a not for profit organization) and after 8 years of extensive research & trials, he has successfully treated hundreds of diabetic patients who were on insulin therapy along with oral medication. High dosage insulin has side effects. Insulin results in weight gain & excess weight requires more insulin. So more weight requires more insulin which results in further increase of weight. The patient is trapped in this vicious circle of excess weight and insulin. Besides the increase in the body weight, the insulin hardens the arteries. It has been observed that 80% of the diabetic patients who are on insulin therapy die of heart attack.
Depending upon the metabolism of the patients, Dhawan’s centre takes them off insulin within 3-20 days and all oral medications within six months. All of them are leading a happy healthy life now. While treating the patients, he adopts a three- pronged strategy of micronutrient rich diet, herbal food supplements & exercise. Human body needs energy at regular intervals and people must eat six meals of small portion in the whole day. Dhawan’s Nature Cure designs the menu of individual patient specifying what, when & how much to eat. It recommends the foods that are the richest in nutrients and low in calories. The emphasis is on lots of raw vegetables (salads), cooked green vegetables & soups. On should eat as much as one likes. Fruits, Nuts, seeds and pulses are the healthy foods which are an important part of Dhawan’s eating plan that meets all the nutritional requirement of the body. To achieve quick results, patients are advised to avoid animal products all processed, refined foods and use minimal of cooking oil.
Dr Dhawan believes that naturopathy is a science & a way of life as the body has an innate amazing ability to heal itself. He treats the cause of the disease rather than the symptoms. The industrially produced synthetic drugs are all chemicals and all of them have side effects. Allopathy does “control” the symptoms of the disease but not the cause of it. It rather suppresses the disease and one has to live a diseased life with the help of various synthetic drugs.
According to International diabetes Federation, (IDF) there are 6.9 million people with diabetes in India, the second highest number in the world after China which have 109 million people with diabetes. At this rate, India will become the diabetes world capital by 2030. Every 10 seconds a person dies of diabetes related complications & every 10 seconds, 2 people are diagnosed of diabetes. The numbers of diabetes deaths have doubled over the last 11 years. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition and if not controlled, it can lead to serious health complications like blindness, kidney damage, nerve damage (neuropathy), impotency, various cardiovascular diseases and even results in foot amputation.
According to Dhawan, naturopathy can reverse diabetes and other lifestyle diseases. Scores of research studies the world over have emphatically established that such diseases can be naturally reversed without the help of any medications.
Dhawan is critical of both the BJP and the Congress and claims that neither party has fulfilled their poll promises. According to him, he has joined the AAP as he wants to work for the people of Chandigarh.
“I have remained in the BJP and the Congress as well and that is why I am well-versed with their working – how they haven’t been able to carry out any development work for the city,” he said. “As the name suggests, I am here for the ‘aam aadmi’ [common people] and will work for him,” he said at a recent rally. “For years, I have been raising the voice for Chandigarh. Today, I got an honest party and a platform from which I will continue to raise the voice of Chandigarh,” he added.
The leader said that the BJP had befooled people of Chandigarh as it had not been able to fulfil its promises made in the previous Lok Sabha elections. The former Union Minister said AAP would provide the residents an alternative to both the BJP and the Congress. He said people were fed up with both the parties.
AAP leader Bhagwant Mann stated that they were happy to have Dhawan in the party. Mann spoke more on the deteriorating situation of law and order in Punjab and took a dig at Congress and SAD in Punjab.
For sure, Dhawan’s; long experience and political acumen will help the AAP consolidate its hold in Chandigarh and do well in the 2019 polls.
